CELEBRITY is an odd thing. Why do we know that Gordon Sumner, a middle-aged Englishman, is extremely flexible?
Well, because Mr. Sumner is also known as Sting, and because he is a celebrity, we know he is a yoga devotee. We also know that this 30-year veteran of the global music scene has finally found a buyer for his Upper West Side apartment at the Brentmore, a co-op at 88 Central Park West.
The apartment first went on the market in 2006 and has had price tags as high as $24 million, according to Streeteasy.com. Last spring, it was listed with Mark D. Friedman and Robert Cabrera of Halstead Property for $19 million. It is now in contract.
The duplex, which is on the second and third floors, was once owned by Billy Joel, the hit-maker whose marriages we know way too much about. The 6,600-square-foot apartment has five bedrooms, four full baths and 23 closets — good for many, many yoga mats.
When they turn in their keys for 88 Central Park West, Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, will leave behind a famous neighbor, Robert De Niro — whom we think we know but probably don’t.
Though Sting has abandoned those 23 closets, he hasn’t gone far. In 2008 he bought a $26.5 million apartment at 15 Central Park West, just a few blocks away. His neighbors there include Lloyd Blankfein, the chief executive of Goldman Sachs — who we know is having a very bad week.
